Song of the day: Tonight is a party

Hello kids,

So for those of you who live in Geneva how bout popping over to Cirkus bar after work tonight for a jam or 10 – where I will kindly be DJing as a guest under my old project Indie Nation. You can find out more about the event here.

So you may remember my previous awe and admiration for the new Labyrinth Ear. Well they still havent given me a much anticipated album but they did do a lovely remix of a Morning Parade song which I will definitely jamming to tonight.

Here is Under the Stars

See you tonight

Song of the day: It's in the blood

Hello kids,

So I have to send a HUGE thank you for everyone who attended The Liberation night. Check out the photos here. It was a big hit, the place was packed and the talent scout loved it. We also got approach by another bar owner who is keen to have us there. So let’s see how it all goes but we will be offering you some new cool events around Geneva. All WIP.

So let’s match that positivity with another positive song. The band is HAIM. Which is the family name of the three sisters.  Who also claim their influences coming from “Mama and Papa Haim” on their Facebook Page. So talk about a musical family.

So the girls have only just started but they have already received a lot of positive feedback for their first EP Forever. Here is the leading single, Forever:

You got to love this vintage video, so many great moments. Especially around 2:40.
But I would also recommend you check out this acoustic video of Go Slow. You’ll see what the fuss is about. The girls got something.

I wish I could make a soundtrack to my life and breathe in the notes every day

Song of the day: Come watch us DJ tonight.

Today is Dday. And I can hardly stop bouncing to the jams I have ready for tonight.
So since its Featured Friday let’s give you something that I will feature during my set.

This is a song coming from my favourite DJ and friend Tommy Gun.

Its Light Year’s Moderation

Start stretching people, I expect you to do some wild dancing tonight,

I wish I could make a soundtrack to my life and breathe in the notes every day

Song of the day: Atoms for ?????

Hello kids,

Only one more sleep till our LIBERATION NIGHT and I can tell you I worked all afternoon and night on my set and your little ears are in for a TREAT tomorrow.
So make sure not to miss it.

The exciting event coming up is that in a week I will going to watch RADIOHEAD perform at  St-Triphon. Are you coming?

So talking of Radiohead, Thom Yorke has a newish project called Atoms for Peace.
But it’s not only Thom there also Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Radiohead producer Nigel Dorich as well as Joey Waronker and Mauro Refosco.
They called it a “supergroup”.

If you recognize the name – well that’s cause it the number 6 track from Thom Yorke’s solo album The Eraser.
And also the the 1953 speech by American President Dwight D. Eisenhower (ya I had to google that).
It only took them a whole year of touring namelessly (being referred to as “????” or more accurately  “Thom Yorke????” ) to come up with it.

So anyways here is the wonderful new single Default.
Video is not bad either.

I wish I could make a soundtrack to my life and breathe in the notes every day

Song of the day: The beauty of simplicity

Hello kids,

So its Monday after a long weekend, I know it’s tough. But something to get your through the week is on FRIDAY we have THE LIBERATION night. How freaking fantastic right? So we are sorry we have been away for so long, but we promise to bring you an amazing DJ set. And since we have a sort of talent scout for new opportunities and cooler parties coming to check it out we ask that YOU PLEASE come to the party so we can bring you many more great events. And bring 10 friends. All details here.

So now onto the music. So I know I have raved heavily about The XX from their debut album to my excitement about their performance at Open’er Festival and of course the wait around their new album. But I could not resist writing another post now that it is finally out.

We love The XX because they are so different, because in their calm way they excite and because they are minimalistic and yet so effective. And of course they embodied all of this with the build up to their album release.

The album will officially be released tomorrow (YIKES!) but over the last week they have offered free streaming through their site (and partner site). But not only were they avant-garde by offering free streaming of the entire album they partnered it with a world map that tracks how the album is being shared. Apparently at first only released to a single fan you can use the timeline to see how the album quickly took over world domination.  It aims at making you feel connected  and part of the community of The XX fans around the world which is a genius concept.
I can happily that the first South African share was from me – lets light up AFRICA!

Now about the album, obviously I have listened to it on repeat non-stop. So first thing I noticed is that the iconic minimalists have out done themselves. It is more simple, more hidden, the sounds seem more and more to be coming from space. This album is much more of a grower than the first listen love-struck effect of their debut album.

What I love The XX the most is that they are hugely popular and thus an album so slow but exciting, so simple but effective can teach people around the world that the beauty is in the detail. This album is rich, and every listen makes you appreciate each of their careful crafted sounds more and more. This is personal, this is intimate, this is their souls being opened. There is something so vulnerable about their Romy and Oliver’s duo confessions (that is such a contrast from their closed and protected appearance) and Jamie XX after all the attention he has gotten has grown several steps in his ability to produce and mix and merge sound in an unearthly way.

So after a few listens sound start to touch you in a really special way. For example your heart skips a beat (see what I did there) as the climax comes in on Reunion after a pause of silence, that’s when you really want to praise Jamie’s work (1:57) – the most upbeat song on the album that will make you want to move. The use of repetition in that song is also beautiful.

The silent pause is also done in Missing (1:20). Which is a much slower and heartbreaking song to start but steps up with power after the silent break and exposes Oliver’s pain and sorrow as he sings my heart is beating in a different way. I also love how the duo swap their background wailing from Romy to Oliver.

You will also look forward to the upbeat Sunset (that beautiful come in after Reunion) that drills the line
I always thought it was a shame, that we have to play these games.
Not to mention the guitar solos.

As you may remember I am obsessed when girl and guy duo sing together, and this is done very effectively to close the beautiful Try when they sing:
You know the way I, can’t resist you, say to myself I’m trying.

Strangely I am addicted to what possibly is the simplest lyrical song. I’m not a big fan of mushy cliché lyrics. And on face value that is what is sung in Our Song. But nothing coming from The XX with the sincerity of their voice can seem that way, neither is the beauty of the background mix done coming in from 0:46. And all I tend to repeat in my head is:
You know I know your heart, I want to mend your heart.

Now I invite you to give it a go. You can find it everywhere by now – including Spotify.

And remember – it just gets better.

I wish I could make a soundtrack to my life and breathe in the notes every day

Song of the day: A double dose of James Murphy this wkd

Hello kids,

Were you at the Of Monsters and Men last night? Hope so, if not you missed out! Review to come very shortly.
But I have more good music news to bring you. Tomorrow is the start of the La Batie festival.
16 days of theatre, dance and MUSIC in over 20 places all over Geneva.

The highlight of the festival is none other than LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy. He is playing a DJ set in Carouge tomorrow.
Read all about it and buy your tickets here for a mere 10CHF (!!!!!!!!!!).

LCD Soundsystem were one of the most amazing dance, indie rock, electro bands there ever was. The group led by James Murphy were 7 members in total. However the amazing ensemble announced in February 2011 that they were splitting and they would have their final concert in Madison Square Garden. The 48hours around the farewell concert was turned into a documentary film called Shut Up and Play the Hits. You can see the trailer here. It looks amazing and the good news is they will be playing the film on Friday at the Cinema Grutli in Plainpalais so get your tickets here. So first watch the movie and then go off to the DJ set. Perfect.

You may remember I already gave you Tribulations, one of my fav for the DJ set. Today I give you this:

You Wanted a Hit

Song of the day: GO TO CONCERTS

Hello kids,

So as always after a lovely weekend of music I come to you with more great new suggestions for a live music experience.
I have said it several times and I will say it again: GO WATCH MUSIC CONCERTS! This is the best way to really appreciate bands and keep the music industry afloat.
How would you like it if you did something incredible and no one was there to witness it?
I promise you won’t regret it.

So not only do I have one new suggestion I have over 10! I finally updated the concert calendar on our FB Page.
Because the following months are going to be BUSY in and around Geneva on the music front.
As always Les Docks gets the number 1 prize with bringing you the most outstanding bands.
So go check it out and put in your calendar so you don’t forget and buy tickets already so you don’t have to deal with disappointment when they sell out.

So the first of these concerts to highlight is Of Monsters and Men, which are playing at Les Docks on Wed.
You should remember from a previous SOTD where I gave out Little Talks. They have a lovely Arcade First look and sound to them.
I can highly recommend the concert – check out all the details here.

Here is a lovely live version of Dirty Paws

Hope to see you on Wed
